Scaling is a procedure that involves the removal of plaque and calculus from the teeth and gums using ultrasonic scaler or hand instruments. It is one of the most basic and important procedure for maintaining good oral hygiene.

Ideally , it should be done at regular intervals of 6 months to 8 months. But due to lack of awareness and lots of myths attached to the procedure , the significance of scaling remains unnoticeable .

FOLLOWING ARE THE MYTHS ASSOCIATED WITH SCALING :

1) Teeth becomes weak and loose after scaling.
2) Teeth become fragile and sensitive and there is loss of tooth structure after scaling.
3) Scaling increases gap between the teeth.
4) Scaling is painful.
5) Scaling causes bleeding from the gums.
FACTS:
Scaling removes plaque and tartar from the teeth ,thus removing the infection which further promotes good attachment between the teeth and the gums leading to firm teeth and healthy gums. It involves use of ultrasonic instrument, it just dislodges the tartar deposits from the tooth surfaces and doesn’t cut the tooth structure at all.

Tartar and plaque starts forming due to already formed gaps between the teeth. As deposition of tartar increases, the extent of infection increases which further leads to boneloss and recession of gums. So, basically gaps are not the result of scaling.

In fact gaps increases with increase in infection because of tartar. Comparatively, it is the simplest procedure of all, there is no pain during scaling. Just mild sensation of scraping / sensitivity can be experienced during the procedure.

In patients with large amounts of tartar and plaque , there can be sensitivity after the procedure which can wear off in few days with the use of desensitising toothpaste.

So, Scaling is mandatory to each one of us.

It should be done at regular intervals of 6-8 months compulsorily, even without any symptoms.
